Pretty much all the old vehicles i own (VW or American)hadn't run for 20 or 30 years when i bought them and i have pretty much every time, planned from the get go to replace the motor before putting it back on the road... But then i always feel the urge to spend a few hours seeing if i can get the original motor to run before pulling it out... maybe it's a waste of time? but then maybe be it's not as i always get that warm feeling of satisfaction as that old lump coughs and splutters back into life after all that time of sitting dormant
This morning i spent a while playing with my 40 Chevy... it has the original motor in it that i know hasn't run since around 1972. it turns freely and with a bit of messing i got it to turn over on the starter motor, I undid the tap under the floor where the fuel tank sits and nothing came out even when i put a bit of fresh fuel in. When i removed the tap i found the pipe going up to the tank was completely blocked with dry crud(not sure exactly what), after running a drill bit up it out trickled the thickest stinkiest thirty something year old fuel you have ever seen! i mistakenly let some run down my hand and after washing it at least 6 times i still can't get rid of the stink!
Tomorrow i'm going to put the distributor cap off my 54 on as the one off the 40 is missing and see if it'll fire up... then i shall probably pull it out
Am i alone in this ritual?
