Subject: 1968 Audi 80 Variant Thu Sep 06 2007, 00:42
The car it's self is a 1968 Audi 80 variant. It's the first model Audi produced as a result of VW, who previously owned 50% of Auto Union buying 100% and changing the name to Audi in 1967ish... the first Audi's did not have a model name and the number(as in 80) was relative to the horse power produced. the only version that was badged with anything other than a number was the estate which is badged the Variant. as far as i've been told there were only six RHD 80 Variants brought into the UK and i believe this is the only surviver. The engine is a 1700cc Audi unit which is petrol fueled but has a higher compression ratio than most petrol engines which is half way between a normal petrol and diesel engine. some other non run of the mill characteristics are the inboard front disc brakes, cloumn shift manual gearbox and torsion bar suspension all round
This car has two registered owners, it was traded in to a car sales man in Suterton Lincs in 1989ish and was used by him on and off until 1992 at which point it was laid up. he never registered the car. it's covered 48,000 miles from new and the inside is perfect. the only wear is in on the carpets but they are only over carpets over the original beige rubber floor covering. the colour is VW Java green as used on 66 Beetles and apart from both sides below the side mouldings and the whole front wings the paint is original.
when i got it back to the workshop i drained the stale petrol out, put a battery on and after a fair amount of turning over it struck up. not bad considering the key was last turned 15plus years ago! it drives and the clutch is good but the brakes are binding and the pedal is rock hard... finding panels is going to be a nighmare but it's just a case of searching hard... they are out there somewhere i'm sure

Well we would but i reckon we are going to sell it... we don't want to but there is no room to store it inside over the winter. it deserves better than that!
plus i must finish the other 50,000347 projects before i start it

Yes sold to Coxy who's a real keen early Audi enthusiast, he has quite a few early ones so it will be keeping good company and being well looked after
