member of the forum Dbzzz had an unfortunate experience when his rear wheel decided to come of whilst driving down the A1... luckily no one was hurt but the bus suffered some nasty rear corner body and suspension damage. the reason the wheel came off was because the last (rogue)mechanic to lay a spanner on it fitted the wrong wheel bolts Rolling Eyes

I have the job of repairing it, here's the how the repairs ar going so far...

this rear corner was really battered even before it's recent shiney paint job, it's thick with filler, if you look around the edges of the bare metal you'll see there isn't anywhere where paint meets metal without a layer of filler between! luckily all the metal is rust free and solid so it's not a problem. i can't start panel beating it straight as i'll start cracking filler in the surrounding area so i'll just have to skim it back up to make good...

thats bad having a wheel come , heard of a few people having them come off (usually after camping at shows) and at low speeds , the person involved was lucky not to be hurt , the van came off fairly well too .
the repair work looks tops Tim
looking at the pics , the remote oil filter did well to survive too , saved you some degreaser eh Tim Laughing

This is a copy of my post on this episode off the SSVC forum...

I would just like to clarify that previous to the wheel coming off episode i had never worked on this bus so Roadhouse Retro Co is in no way to blame for what happened.

i can now tell you that the reason the wheel came off was due to the wrong wheel bolts being fitted. with steel wheels you use a radiused wheel bolt where as on most alloys you use a 60 degree taper. the rear wheels of this bus had been fitted with 60 degree taper bolts which were bottoming out on the drum before they were properly tightening against the wheel... i am very suprised they did not come off sooner!

the pic below is of how it should look with a radiused bolt...

The pic below shows how it was on this bus and it's not hard to tell where the problem lies, also the length of the thread is only around 8mm which is far too short on a 12mm bolt!

Shocking!

Ok some progress...

because of the amount of filler i had to blend into with more filler i roller primed the area so it got a nice thick build and left it to settle for a few weeks so that it would not sink in the future. then yesterday gave it a good block flatting and then today, masked it and reprimed it...
