As you can see most of my cars are original faded or burnt through paint, i have been hankering for a new project i can get stuck into and really go to town on without worrying about chopping a nice original car or destroying what i see as lovely original patina... My trained proffesion is vehicle bodywork and painting so i feel it's time to dust off the old spray gun and have a play Smile

i was looking for a 39 Cevy business coupe but they seem to be really thin on the ground... then i came across this 40 which shape wise the more i look at the more i love!

the car is still in the US and is awaiting shipment to the UK, i can't wait to see it in the flesh!

Smile

Here's a few goodies i found for the 40 on ebay that were missing or i just bought as spares...

These are the panels that go between the bonnet and the front wings, i was chuffed to find these especially for the price i got them for...

I needed this boot hinge as the original is broken

This is the front bonnet badge that was missing

this are the pieces that go either side of the bonnet badge, again missing.

A pair of NOS glass rear light lenses, they weren't missing but for the price well worth having as spares i reckon.

Again not missing but i have some plans for the grille and don't want to hack the original about and then then decide i liked it as it was better...

Just goes to show even with an American car(depending how popular it was) that's almost 70 years old you can still find pretty much anything fairly quickly new or second hand Smile

I had a bit of a shock this morning...

This car is suposed to be still sitting in the warehouse in LA as i was waiting for some parts to arrive there for it and i don't have any need for it to be back here yet... i was expecting the Pontiac to arrive in the next couple of weeks. i called my shipping company here in the UK to check dates etc and they told me the 40 is due to arrive on the 23rd Jan and they have no news on the Pontiac so it looks like they shipped them the wrong way around!!!

quite exciting that i'll see it soon in the flesh but a complete finacial nightmare as i will have to pay for the shipping on the 40 and i wont have the Pontiac here to sell before the Chevy arrives as planned somf(

The car is a 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe business coupe, that means it was top of the range(it had a heater Laughing ) and was basically a traveling salesmans car with a front bench seat and the fuel tank under where the rear seat would have been so there's more luggage room in the boot and behind the front seat where the rear seat would be normally.

here's what i've found so far...

The body is in amazing condition rust wise, the only through rust i have found is on the rear valance outwards of the bumper irons, the rear R/H wing front and rear edge and a tiny bit along the inside of the bottom of the drivers door. the floor is really clean inside the car and the whole of the underside of the car is really dry with only light surface rust. Amazing for a car that's 69 years old and looks so messy on the outside It looks like the last owner has been playing with the bodywork over the years, there are lots of areas that are bare metal or just have a light coat of primer over them, and you can see bondo on the body around the boot lid and on the boot lid it's self, but generaly it's very straight and there are lots of areas where you can see the original Kingston grey paint. Very Happy

The car also seems very complete, most of what was missing on the photos was inside the car including the hood badges, rear bumper, overriders, bonnet drop side panels and rear fender. the biggest part it's missing is the seat. Mechanically it seems pretty complete too, the motor turns over and is just missing it's dizzy cap. not that all that matters as mechanically pretty much everything will be replaced.

so as you can imagine after buying the car from only four crap photos and an more less useless description, now i've see it in the flesh i am a very happy man indeed! Very Happy

avin
